Security Configuration
It is possible to set different levels of security using Pictorius Net
Servers. Included in this configuration is the ability to preset groups,
their users (with passwords), and structured file and folder
accessibility. It is also possible to allow or exclude specific Domains
from accessing specific files or folders.
The security configuration has two main configuration settings Users & Groups and File & Folder Access. In the following sections we will demonstrate how to set up the security configuration available with the Pictorius Net Servers. Examples are given with brief walkthroughs.
With the Net Servers Configuration application running, select Security from the Configure menu. You are presented with the following window:
Users & Groups
The first popup displayed is Users & Groups. It is here that
you define and configure the groups, the users belonging to these groups, their user
names, and passwords.
To add a new group, click the Add button and type the name of the group into the Group Name field. Once you have created a group you may add the users that will have the privileges of that group. For example: Two groups may be created within a company for Technical Support and Marketing. Within both those groups you may add all the members of that group or be more selective and add only those people who may obtain the access that their group will be allowed. Your window would then look similar to the following:
File & Folder Access
From the popup menu select File & Folder Access. The following
window is displayed:
From this window you can configure files or folders that you may wish to have accessible to certain groups or domains, as well as editing already existing files or folders.
To specify the file or folder, click the Add button and browse to a complete folder or a specific file. Click on Select to have this file or folder added to the list. Once a file or folder is added to the list you may select it and start setting permissions or remove it by clicking the Remove button.
Groups Permitted
To add a group which will be allowed access to this particular file or folder, click the Add button. You are presented with a list of the groups currently existing in the list of Groups & Users. It will be similar to the following:
Select the group you wish to have access to a selected file or folder and click OK. This group and all of its users will now be able to access this file or folder. When attempting to open this file or folder they will be requested to enter their user name and password which was previously set up in the Groups & Users list. (Refer to the previous section for more information on setting up groups and users.)
Domains Permitted
To add a Domain to the accessible list for a specific file or folder, ensure the file or folder is selected and click the Add button. You will be presented with the following window:
Type in the Domain name and click OK. This Domain is now permitted access to this file or folder.
Domains Excluded
To exclude a particular Domain from having access to a specified file or folder, ensure the file or folder is selected and click the Add button.
Type the name of the particular Domain and click OK. This Domain is now denied access to this file or folder.
Note: Domains excluded from access override all other parameters in this Security Configuration window, i.e Groups Permitted and Domains Permitted.
Your finished window may be similar to the following:
