browser
The local application you use to connect to an Internet server. It interprets and displays HTML encoded documents in graphic format.
client
The application on your computer that interconnects with a server.
GIF
An acronym for Graphic Interchange Format. The Graphic Interchange Format is a common cross-platform, WWW format for graphics. It was developed by CompuServe. By definition GIFs are always in 256 colors. Another common WWW graphic format is the JPEG format.
HTML
An acronym for HyperText Markup Language. It is descended from SGML and is used to "markup" or identify which parts of an .html or .htm text file to display in which format.
hypertext
Computer documents that contain links embedded in text or graphics. Hypertext links display related information when you click on them.
Internet
The largest computer network in the world.

JPEG
A acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group graphic format.The JPEG format was developed for high-quality photographs and supports 24-bit images. Another common WWW graphic format is the GIF format.

These are "hot spots" embedded in text or graphics that display related information when you click on them.
local site
Web pages that are installed on your local computer usually while undergoing construction.
SGML
An acronym for the Standard Generalized Markup Language. This system of tags is used to delineate parts of a plain text document by encoding the intended formatting which a viewer application can interpret and display.
Web page
A text document which is encoded in HTML, displayed by a browser application, and accessible from remote sites via the WWW.
Web site
The collection of all files which are linked to a central Web page and are available via the World Wide Web.
World Wide Web
The part of the Internet that contains hypertext documents.
URL
An acronym for Uniform Resource Locator. A specific address used by Web browsing software to locate and access information on the WWW.
